Lesson 1 · Overview

Why small decisions matter

Most compliance issues don’t start with a headline-making decision. They begin with a small moment: a casual offer, a quick shortcut, or a quiet assumption that “this is probably fine.” Those are the moments where your choices matter most.

This microcourse highlights everyday situations where your response can either reduce risk or unintentionally increase it. As you scroll, pause to imagine what you would realistically do in your role, not just what the “textbook” answer might be.

Reflection prompt: Think of a time you noticed something that felt slightly off—maybe a comment, a shortcut, or an informal workaround. What did you do? What would you do now?
Lesson 2 · Fast scenarios

Three everyday risk moments

Here are three simplified versions of situations that show up frequently across organizations. You may recognize elements of these from your own work, even if the details differ.

Gift from a vendor
A long-time vendor sends you a high-end personal gift after a contract is renewed. Nothing is said about expectations, but it feels generous.
Conflict of interest Appearance vs. intent
Sensitive info in public
You’re on a call in a public place while a colleague shares specifics about an investigation, including names and timelines. People nearby can clearly hear parts of the conversation.
Confidentiality Data protection
“Rounded” time reporting
A teammate mentions they often “round up” hours to match expectations and hints that “everyone does it.” They seem confident this is normal.
Integrity Accurate records
Try this: For each scenario, note how you would respond today. Then compare your instinct to your organization's written policy or code of conduct.
Lesson 3 · Knowledge check

Putting principles into practice

Below is a single scenario-style question that brings together the themes from above. Choose the response that best reflects a compliance-first mindset.

Question

A vendor sends you an expensive gift at home after a successful project. What is the best first step?

Lesson 4 · Wrap-up

Turning awareness into habit

Awareness is the first step; habits are what sustain a strong culture of compliance. The next time you’re in a gray area, slow down and ask:

  • Would I be comfortable if this decision were on the front page?
  • Does this align with our written policy and values?
  • Do I need guidance from a manager, HR, or compliance?

When in doubt, ask early. Most issues are far easier to resolve at the “small decision” stage than after they’ve become a pattern.

This sample is intentionally lightweight: a single HTML file that mimics a RISE-style scrolling lesson. It can be embedded, re-themed, or extended for your own compliance topics.
